What are sealants?
A dental sealant is a protective coating that your dentist or hygienist can paint onto your teeth to provide long-lasting extra protection from decay. This is an easy in-office procedure that can be completed quickly. Sealants provide a protective layer to prevent the plaque build that leads to enamel erosion and decay.

Why are sealants needed?
Dental sealants are a protective coating that is beneficial for the health of your teeth. It is a clear layer that prevents cavities from forming in the areas where the sealants are applied. For children, sealants can be especially beneficial in preventing early formation of cavities, that would eventually require a filling.

I highly recommend family dental in Biddeford, me. I’ve always been very nervous about going to get dental work done. Here it’s been a pleasant and pain free experience.

What makes you a good candidate for sealants?
Sealants are more commonly recommended for younger patients as their adult teeth start to come in. Sealants can be performed on all ages though. Adults who do not have fillings or decay on their back teeth may also be good candidates. Every patient is different and it is best to consult with your dentist about the possibility of sealants.

What can be expected during the sealant process?
The teeth that will be receiving sealants are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Once dry a bonding agent will be brushed onto the tooth and cured with a specialized curing light. The sealant material is piped onto the tooth, evenly distributed and cured until hard. The process is quick and tolerated well by even our youngest patients.
